#322 Stone - Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout

This beer has a very low aroma just like hints of dark roast malt and chocolate. The color is black as can be without any light getting though. The head pours medium with low retention.

The taste is malty sweet with a pronounced chocolate flavor. There is a strong bitter taste to the beer that blends well with the chocolate flavor, as the name implies. The bottle mentions bitter chocolate which sounds right because there very little hop flavor. Even for a 9.2% alcohol by volume this beer has a strong alcohol taste and warmth. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy a result of the oatmeal use. The finish is chocolate and alcohol not a perfect combo.

This is a really tasty beer, great blend of chocolate and bitterness with a wonderful smooth taste. I just wish the alcohol flavor was lower, otherwise this is a wonderful beer.

It is really funny to see the beers that you review. I recently went to Michigan and visited the New Holland brewery and had some of there beers including the Mad Hatter and the Imperial Hatter. (Tasty) When I was in Michigan I picked up the Stone Bitter Chocolate. I just thought it ironic that you reviewed these two beers recently.

All these beers have come from Kentucky, I don't think they are available in Missouri. Am I going to get to review a beer from the Stable before I hit beer 365?

Sitting here in a pub, drinking the Stone.

It's OK, I think. A taste that I describe as soy sauce-ish, and a pretty strong alcohol aftertaste.
