#312 George Gale & Co - Prize Old Ale

This beer smells like sherry even with grape notes. The color is a very dark brown with only a bit of light shining through. There is no head at all on this beer, the bottle opened without any carbonation.

This beer has a harsh alcohol flavor, similar to dry sherry. There is a lot of oxidization taste with raisin and hints of earthiness and dust. A bit of dark malt flavor is also present, just a little stout flavor. The mouthfeel is medium, and flat. Age sherry flavors dominate the finish.

I am not such a fan of this beer. The harsh alcohol taste is the big problem, especially for a beer that is only 9%. This taste more like sherry than beer, I even checked the bottle to make sure I didn't make a mistake.

The last few years of the corked version of POA were, not to be prissy, rubbish. No condition, no maturity. Fortunately the version just released by Fuller's, which was matured at its Chiswick brewery, is vastly superior, and promises to mature very well. Don't let your experience of this one put you off.
