#329 Kiuchi - Hitachino Nest Red Rice

This is an Ale brewed with red rice cultured in ancient Japan.

This beer has an earth grainy taste, like fresh malt, there is also an unfamiliar sharp aroma. The color is a pale orange with some haze. The head pours thick with moderate retention.

There is a fruity flavor to this beer, like fresh peach or apple. There is a tangy flavor similar to a sour beer, but far less, more like a hint of white wine. There is no clear hop flavor or malt characteristic. The mouthfeel is a medium with high carbonation. The finish is light and fruity.

This is a really tasty beer, I am doing a poor job describing the flavors since they are not normal beer tastes. The fruit flavor is really like and enjoyable.

#328 Corsendonk - Abbey Pale Ale

Another beer from Corsendonk, first beer I has was their Brown Ale.

This beer has a yeasty aroma with some Belgian spice flavor. The color is a golden with a haze. The haze is formed by large pieces of yeast floating around like a snow globe. the head poured thick and fizzed down quickly.

There is a lot of traditional Belgian spice and yeast flavors in this beer. There is a bit of sweetness in the start of the beer and it drys out well. The mouthfeel is thick, parhaps from all the suspended yeast. The finish is dry and spicy.

This is a good example of a basic Belgian beer. Drinkable and with a lot of Belgian spice flavor.

#327 New Holland - Red Tulip

There is a malty caramel aroma with notes of grain. The color is a dark red with some haze allowing only a little light through. The head pours thin and has little retention.

The taste is very malty with lots of caramel and and grain flavors. There is also a tea or thin coffee taste to this beer with a bit of tannin flavor. This beer starts with some sweetness but quickly dries out. There is a bit of bitterness blending with the tannin flavor, but no real hop presence. The mouthfeel is light with a moderate carbonation. The finish is grainy and dry

This is a really enjoyable beer, a good malt flavor with plenty of complexity. Just an all around tasty enjoyable beer.

#326 J.W. Lees - Moonraker

This beer has an earthy aroma that has been common with other J.W. Lees beers. The color is a deep mahogany with some red highlights shining through. The head pours thick will some retention.

The taste is a little sweet with hints of roasted malt. There is some hints of fruitiness that might be associated with the hops. There is an earthy root cellar flavor that is common with J.W. beers. The mouthfeel is medium with pretty low carbonation. The finish is earthy.

This beer is a lot like the other J.W. Lees beers. They all have a similar earthy root cellar flavor, I enjoy this flavor I just think it is odd all of their beers have this flavor.

#325 New Holland - Full Circle Kolsch

This beer has a very faint malt aroma. The color is a light yellow with a bit of haze. The head is medium with good retention.

The taste is subtle, a little malt flavor with some graininess. There is also some light hop flavors, giving the beer a little spice. The mouthfeel is medium thin. The finish is clear with some hints of bitterness.

This is a fine beer, not much complexity but that is what is expected in a Kolsch. This is a light easy drinking beer, just like a Kolsch should be.

#324 Bison - Oeganic IPA

This beer has a strong hoppy aroma with some hints of sweety malt. The color is a light gold with plenty of haze. The head is thick with good retention.

The taste is hoppy with lots of floral flavors. There is a some malt sweetness, almost like candy. The mouth feel is medium smooth, with lots of carbonation. The finish is sweet with some hops.

This is a fine beer, not really complex but plenty tasty.

#323 Dogfish Head - Palo Santo Marron

The fermenting tanks use for this beer is made of Paraguayan Palo Santo. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. Here is a video about the making of this beer.

This beer has an odd smoky, molasses aroma. The color is black without any light getting through. The head is low, but says around keeping the beer covered.

There is a lot of flavor in this beer. The most noticeable flavor is wood and earthy, definitely from the aging in a Palo Santo fermentor. There is also some age beer raisin and vanillaflavor also likely from the fermentor. The malt flavor is sweet like molasses with some hints of malt. The mouthfeel is smooth and thick. The finish is a little alcohol warmth mixed with molasses.

This is a really unique beer.

#322 Stone - Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout

This beer has a very low aroma just like hints of dark roast malt and chocolate. The color is black as can be without any light getting though. The head pours medium with low retention.

The taste is malty sweet with a pronounced chocolate flavor. There is a strong bitter taste to the beer that blends well with the chocolate flavor, as the name implies. The bottle mentions bitter chocolate which sounds right because there very little hop flavor. Even for a 9.2% alcohol by volume this beer has a strong alcohol taste and warmth. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy a result of the oatmeal use. The finish is chocolate and alcohol not a perfect combo.

This is a really tasty beer, great blend of chocolate and bitterness with a wonderful smooth taste. I just wish the alcohol flavor was lower, otherwise this is a wonderful beer.

#321 New Holland - Mad Hatter IPA

There is a strong hop aroma to this IPA with floral and fruity characteristics. The color is a dark amber letting plenty of light through. The head is very thick with large bubbles and great retention.

The taste is hoppy with spice and floral hop flavors. There is only a hint of malt sweetness making this a very hop forward IPA. The bitterness is strong, but not over whelming. The mouthfeel is thick with taste tingling my tongue. The finish is hoppy and a little bitter.

This is an alright beer, a too much hops and not too little malt. I was really excited by the aroma, but the taste just was too one sided. This is a fine beer for a hop head.

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

#320 New Holland - Sundog Amber Ale

This beer has a light malty aroma with some bready notes. The color is a reddish amber with a hint of haze. The head pours medium with medium retention.

There is a strong malty flavor to this beer with sweet honey and caramel and fruit notes. There is an ever so slight hop taste and bitterness, just enough to be noticed. The mouthfeel is medium full with some carbonation. The finish is sweet with some malt flavor.

This is a fine beer, and a good example of an amber ale. Very drinkable with a good amount of flavor.

#319 Brew Dog - Paradox Islay

Another beer from Brew Dog, this one uses barrels for the Islay region.

This beer has a strong Islay Scotch aroma, with peat smoke and sea salt notes. The color is black without any light shining through. The head pours thick with little retention, fizzing down to just cover the top of the beer.

This beer has a pronounced scotch flavor with noticeable stout characteristics. The scotch flavor is smoky with peat smoke with just a hint of sea salt and a little oak barrel taste. The stout roasted malt flavor is present along with a bit of sweetness. There is a hint of alcohol warmth that adds to the scotch flavor. The mouthfeel is full with good carbonation. The finish is smoky with scotch.

This is a wonderful beer a good balance of scotch and beer. Islay is my favorite region for scotch and this beer does the scotch justice. I like the scotch flavors in an easy drinking 12oz glass.

#318 Harviestoun - Bitter & Twisted

The beer has a very light smell with earthy dirt aromas and a hint of fruit. The color is a pale yellow with large bit of sediment, likely yeast, floating around. The head pours thin, and has light retention.

This is beer has a light flavor with a honey like malt flavor with a bit of earthiness. There is some grass hop flavor but it is pretty light. The most pronounced flavor is some fruitiness that is a little on the sour side. The mouthfeel is thin with very little carbonation. The finish is fruity with just a touch of sour.

This is an ok beer, I'm not crazy about the light flavors. The earthiness and the sour fruit just don't blend well. The bottle says the beer is cask conditioned which would provide the earthiness and has a late addition of hop that give the fruit flavor so I know this beer taste close to what is expected.

#314 Harvey & Sons - Imperial Extra Double Stout

What a mouthful of a name for this beer / style only word missing is export, but that is kind of the same as imperial. The bottle has a story about Albert Le Coq, a Belgian in the 1800's that exported imperial stout from England to Russia.

This beer has a strong sour aroma, I do think that this is beer is supposed to have wild yeast. The color is black with out any light getting through. The head pours medium but has very little retention.

There is a lot of wild yeast funk in this beer. I think this bottle is infected, this is by no means a Imperial Extra Double Stout, this is a sour beer. Horse blanket and wild yeast sourness is the only flavor present in this beer.

This beer is clearly infected. Checking other reviews on Beer Advocate this beer is not supposed to be sour, and I don't like sour beers.

#313 Brew Dog - Paradox Speyside

Brew Dog is a Scottish brewery that recently started distribution in St. Louis. This is a stout aged in Scottish whisky barrels from the Glen Moray distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland.

There is a hot alcohol aroma to this beer, with only a hint of dark roast malt. The color is a as black as can be without any light shining through. The head pours thick and has good retention.

This beer has a complex flavor, starting with a malty roasted grain flavor of a stout. There is also a pronounced alcohol flavor that is warmer than expected but not over whelming. Along with the alcohol flavor there is an strong oak wood taste for the barrel aging the beer went through. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy like a good stout. The finish is a little hot from alcohol, but similar to a scotch.

This is a fine beer for someone who like scotch, the alcohol flavors are too strong for the average beer drinker. The base beer of a stout works well with the alcohols and flavors from the scotch barrel.

#312 George Gale & Co - Prize Old Ale

This beer smells like sherry even with grape notes. The color is a very dark brown with only a bit of light shining through. There is no head at all on this beer, the bottle opened without any carbonation.

This beer has a harsh alcohol flavor, similar to dry sherry. There is a lot of oxidization taste with raisin and hints of earthiness and dust. A bit of dark malt flavor is also present, just a little stout flavor. The mouthfeel is medium, and flat. Age sherry flavors dominate the finish.

I am not such a fan of this beer. The harsh alcohol taste is the big problem, especially for a beer that is only 9%. This taste more like sherry than beer, I even checked the bottle to make sure I didn't make a mistake.

#311 Harviestoun - Old Engine Old Black Ale

Harviestoun brewery is a Scottish brewery. This beer is named by Harviestoun’s original master brewer Ken Brooker spend much of his early life crafting wooden design prototypes for the Ford motor company. This black, viscous beer reminded Ken of thick, gloopy car engine oil, so he named it in honour of his second love, the internal combustion engine.

This beer has a rich malty aroma with roasted notes. The color is black like engine oil, and the head is thick with good retention.

The taste is malty with some chocolate sweetness accented by roasted malt. There is some weak old ale oxidization flavor and a hint of raisin. Hop flavor is only a hint or suggestion of floral flavor. The mouthfeel is full and smooth and creamy. The finish is malty sweet with some chocolate.

This is a delicious beer, wonderful rich flavors all blending well. Great smooth mouthfeel, making this a just ideal beer to drink.

#309 Boulevard Smoke Stack - Saison

This beer has a spicy Belgian aroma with a hint a phenolic band-aid . The color is a light yellow or gold with a bit of haze. The head is thick and fluffy with good retention.

The taste is very spicy with just a some sour fruit flavor. The sour fruit taste is similar to unripe pineapple, or orange peel. Malt flavor is slight with some sweetness adding to the fruit appearance. There is no detectable hops. The mouthfeel is medium with a huge amount of carbonation. The finish is a little sour.

This beer is not really my favorite, just a bit too much sour taste. I enjoy the spice flavor and the fruit, just too much sour.

#308 Orkney Brewing - Dark Island Dark Ale

Not sure what style a "Dark Ale" is, I guess something along the line of stout or porter.

The aroma rich and malty with a molasses note. The color is black with red highlights shining through. The head is medium with good retention keeping the beer well covered.

The taste is malty, with a roasted taste, like food cooked over a campfire. The is an ever so slight hint of hops along with an equally slight bitterness. The malt has a little residue sweetness keeping the beer from being dry. There is some tannin flavors present but they are overshadowed by the roasted malt. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. The finish is roasty with a hint of sweet.

This is a really tasty beer, I really like roasted campfire taste. I've really enjoy the beers from this brewery.

#307 Mendocino - White Hawk IPA

This beer has a weak aroma with hops being the only sent coming across. The color is a medium brown or amber with some haze. The head pours thick but not too thick and has good retention.

Even though the aroma is weak the taste is not. This beer has a huge hop flavor, strong American hop flavor of citrus with lemon and orange characteristics. There is only a hint of malt sweetness hardly noticeable next to the hops. The bitterness is strong as expected from so much hops. The mouthfeel is medium full with plenty of carbonation. The finish is hoppy with some bitterness, not a huge surprise.

This beer could really use some malt backbone to balance against the hops. If someone is looking for a really hoppy beer this is a good choice.

#306 Abita - Purple Haze

I really like the name of this beer, it's fun and creative. Purple from the raspberry and hazy from this being a wheat beer, and hazy.

This beer has a strong what beer aroma with plenty of fruit notes. The color is a hazy orange, or tan. The head pours thin, surprising for a wheat beer, must be the raspberry.

The taste of this beer is fruity with strong berry flavors. There is also a wheat beer taste but with almost no yeast taste. The mouthfeel is smooth and full with tons of carbonation. The finish is clean with a hint of fruit.

This is a really tasty beer. Sometimes I don't like beers with fruit added but this one taste like real fruit. The wheat beer flavor of this beer is still clear and enjoyable.

Monday, July 7, 2008

#305 Abita - Amber

This beer has a rich caramel malt aroma with a hint of spice from hops and an ever so slight fruit aroma. The color is a dark amber with some orange highlight. The head pours well behaved and low and stays just barely covering the beer.

The taste is lightly malty with caramel flavors and some tannins. There is very little sweetness to this beer, and it quick drys out. The hops bring some bitterness and some spice flavors. The mouthfeel is medium full with some carbonation. The finish is dry with a tannin taste.

This is a pretty tasty beer, a little too dry, but still very enjoyable. This is by far the best Abita I've had, maybe this one isn't old?

Sunday, July 6, 2008

#304 Fort Collins Brewery - Rocky Mountain IPA

This beer has with a hoppy aroma with piny grassy notes. There is a surprising red color to this IPA and it is very clear. The head pour medium with medium retention, not an over flowing foam like some IPAs.

The taste is very hoppy with strong pine flavors. There is a hint of malt sweetness but it is over shadowed by the hops. The hops are quite bitter, with mainly pine flavors, just a touch of fruitiness. The mouthfeel is full and well carbonated. The finish is hoppy and bitter.

This beer has too much pine flavored hops without enough malt to support the hops. I am not really to happy with this beer. The bitterness is making my mouth water it is so strong.

#303 Lakefront Brewery - Bridge Burner Strong Ale

Friday, July 4, 2008

#302 Abita - Strawberry Harvest Lager

This beer has a slightly skunky aroma mix with a hint of fruit. The color is a standard lager straw with a bit of haze. The head is mild with good retention.

The taste is a little skunky with a hint of strawberry. The little bit of fruit flavor is very good but is is over shadowed by the skunked beer taste. There is some residual sweetness helping with the strawberry flavor. The mouthfeel is thin but refreshing. The finish is clean just a hint of fruit.

If there was no skunk taste this would be a pretty good beer. I again suspect the store I bought this from does a poor job rotating there selection of "build your own 6-pack" singles.

#301 Abita Ale - Turbo Dog

Abita Ale is made near New Orleans, and was highly recommended by a friend of mine who went to school at Tulane.

This beer has a chocolate malt smell mixed with a hint of earthiness. The color is a very dark brown with some dark red shining through when held to light. The head is light brown and thick with good retention.

The taste is malty and chocolaty with a hint of roasted malt. There is a slight floral hop flavor, but a light overall hop flavor and bitterness. The mouthfeel is full and smooth. The finish is a little sweet and malty.

This is a pretty good beer. The bottle mentions dry hopping but I am not getting much hop flavor or aroma. This beer came from the same store as other beer with suspicious qualities, I know dry hop flavors will decrease with time, this beer might have some age on it.

#300 Anheuser-Busch - Bud Light Lime

This is a newer offering from AB, my mom recommend I give it a try, she thought it was a funny idea to just add lime to beer.

There is a strong lime aroma to this beer, like smelling pure lime juice. The color is normal Bud Light straw and clear. The head pours thin and quickly fizzes away to zero.

The lime flavor comes across first in the taste with a nice bit of residual sweetness. There is some corn DMS taste, but it is very light. The mouthfeel is light and refreshing. The finish has a slight stale beer or dusty, taste.

This is an ok beer, nothing very bad about it nothing very good. I don't know what's up with the finish all I know is that is makes me want to take another sip to wash the taste away. Something about the sour lime taste and the corn DMS mixing oddly. I don't know if this is just Bud Light with lime added I think this beer is a little sweeter than Bud Light normally is.

#299 Boulevard - Sixth Glass Quadrupel Ale

This beer has a strong Belgian spice aroma mixed with some fruity notes and yeast. The color is a hazy brown without any light passing though. The head pours thick with good retention keeping the beer covered.

This beer has a sweet start with a brown sugar and fruit flavor, like a dessert made with raisins. The Belgian spice / clove flavor is present and not overwhelming. There is some alcohol taste, but it is subtle similar to a glass of sherry. The mouthfeel is smooth and full with plenty of carbonation playing on the tongue. The finish is spicy and sweet.

This is a wonderful beer, lots of strong Belgian spice flavors without being overwhelming. The sweetness could be dialed back a touch, but this is a great beer.
